“Come è profonda ed oscura e tuttavia contiene qualche essenza”
1976, ink on china paper, 71x60cm

Hsiao Chin is an artist born in Shanghai in 1935 whose role has been predominant in the evolution of Chinese painting towards abstraction. Hsiao Chin grew up in an artistic universe. His father (Hsiao Yu-mei), a famous musician and pioneer of contemporary Chinese music, introduced him to all forms of art. In 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was proclaimed, he moved to Taiwan. Hsiao Chin entered the studio of Li Zhong-Sheng (also called Lee Chun-Shan) on Antung Street in Taipei in 1952, where he followed the teacher’s teaching for some years. In 1956 he actively participated in the founding of the Ton Fan Group, with Ho-Kan and Hsiao Ming-Hsien. In the same year he gets a scholarship that allows him to study art in Spain. Despite his distance, he remains very active within the group. While information about Western contemporary art is still very sketchy in Taiwan, Hsiao Chin regularly submits articles that are published in a Taipei newspaper (United Daily News). He also corresponds directly with Ho-Kan and the artists of the Ton Fan Group. In 1959 he moved to Milan where he founded the Punto Group and became friends with Lucio Fontana. He left to live in the United States from 1967 to 1972, where he taught painting in various prestigious schools and met artists such as Mark Rothko and William De Kooning. In 1973 he returned to live in Milan. In 2010, a major retrospective of his work was held at the Kaohsiung Museum.
